Hanging out in Broken Cove

As most of my discoveries of new places in SL happen, this one was the result of crash landing a vehicle. I caught air in my car, flew for three sims, and landed in the midst of a delightfully run-down waterfront called Broken Cove. This little area is marvelously detailed, with all the look and feel of a small rural business whose customers have long since moved on.

Both primwork and texturing are superb. The whole area looks dirty, rusty, and decayed, a far cry from the straight lines and flat colors common to many areas of Second Life. It tells a story. The details make the place feel like there have been people here, possibly still a few eking out a living who are out on a boat checking the crab pots.

Friends of mine lived in next door Pimushe for a while, and I remember much of the region of Sutherland to be covered in false starts at making night clubs over the water. It’s great to see something so beautiful and thoughtful here, instead of flat platforms full of flashing lights. Broken Cove conforms to its landscape instead of covering it.

Chandra, I love these builds, too, they really are a work of art and I love visiting them. They’re in the view of all the land I own in the Sutherland dam area and rent out, so I am really happy to have them as neighbours.

Your notion that this area was merely a blighted clubby mess until these folks came along is skewed, however. One parcel on one side was indeed owned for a time by a club hanging over the water — it wasn’t the worst that can happen but we were glad it moved along. The rest of the sim is divided between several landowners including myself who have always tried to keep this area nice. There have been some fantastic builds over time, including Jessica Ornitz’s store and home for a time with it’s 19th century steampunk look; Elle Pollack’s interior decorating of the Sutherland Dam itself, which is a fluke (the land under a Linden build sold so we turned it into a low-impact discussion club); and others who have tried to make it interesting and not merely straight lines and clubs.

Blight is, perhaps, too strong a term. Sutherland wasn’t a complete mess, I’ll grant you, but the clubby bit was rather distracting from the better portions of the sim. I’ve loved the hidey hole beneath the Sutherland Dam for some time; I’m happy to see it decorated, and presumably seeing a little use now and then.

I’m sad to have missed out on Jessica’s steampunk builds; it’s a genre I greatly appreciate. But I’m happy to hear that you and other landowners in Sutherland are doing their part to keep the area looking nice. It’s a sim with particularly interesting geography, and it always makes me happy to see beautiful things that complement the terrain rather than obscure it.
