Second Annual Satellite Exhibition (2ASE)
I was looking over the map on the Second Life home page, and a distinctive circular structure caught my eye in Georgean. Upon teleporting over to have a closer look, I found myself in the middle of a large event space for the 2ASE.
Searching through the forums, I ran across the 2ASE announcement, which doesn’t do much to describe what’s taking place. I expect to see lots of high geekery on display by this weekend, when the event officially takes place, some of which may or may not have something to do with satellites.
I missed the first one of these, and I probably would have missed this one were it not for its appearance on the map. Admittedly, I don’t hang out in the forums much, but it seems like nifty things like this could stand to be better highlighted. I’d love to see something like a Coming Attractions weblog, complete with an RSS feed I could plug into an aggregator (like Bloglines) so things like this will pop up in my regular reading.
Then again, such a site would most likely be easily abused if available for public posting, much as the in-world Events list is. And of course, moderating such a list would earn Linden Lab the ire of Second Life’s Wingnut Party, the group of conspiracy theorists who inevitably make life miserable for everyone by crying foul at the merest hint of favoritism.
Depressing thoughts on the tragedy of the commons aside, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store at 2ASE this weekend. It’s already a magnificent build to ogle, and it’s not even finished yet. It ought to be even more interesting once all the exhibits are in place and filled with scripty goodness.
